Pharmacological action

Causes irritation of the intestinal receptor apparatus, has a direct effect on the intestinal mucosa, enhancing its motility and increasing mucus secretion in the large intestine.

Not absorbed in the intestines. It is a prodrug, in an alkaline environment, hydrolysis occurs with the formation of a metabolite that has an irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract. The action takes place during the first hour.

Indications

Hypotonic and atonic constipation (including constipation in the elderly constipation after surgery and childbirth). Stool regulation (hemorrhoids, proctitis, anal fissures). Preparation for surgical operations, instrumental and radiological studies.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, intestinal obstruction, restrained hernia, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity, peritonitis, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, metrorrhagia, cystitis, spastic constipation, acute proctitis, acute hemorrhoids, 8 years of age, children.

Dosage and administration

Rectally, it is prescribed in the following doses: for adults and children over 14 years old - 10-20 mg of bisacodyl (1-2 suppositories), for children 8-14 years old - 10 mg of bisacodyl (1 suppository).

Side effects

Intestinal colic, diarrhea (dehydration, impaired water-electrolyte metabolism, muscle weakness, cramps, decreased blood pressure), abdominal pain, flatulence, allergic reactions.

Overdose

Symptoms: diarrhea, dehydration, disturbance of water-electrolyte balance, hypokalemia, atony of the colon.

Treatment: symptomatic.
