pharmachologic effect

A locally irritating agent, the action of which is due to reflex reactions arising from irritation of the nerve endings of the skin. When moistened with warm water under the influence of the enzyme myrosin in the presence of heat and moisture, the glycoside sinigrin contained in the mustard plaster is hydrolyzed to form allyl oil (allyl isothiocyanate), which has a local irritating effect.

Possibly: allergic reactions, excessive burning sensation.
