pharmachologic effect

Antifungal polyene antibiotic of the macrolide group, has a broad spectrum of antifungal action. Has a fungicidal effect. Natamycin binds sterols of cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and function, which leads to the death of microorganisms. Most pathogenic yeasts, especially Candida albicans, are sensitive to natamycin. Dermatophytes are less sensitive to natamycin. Resistance to natamycin has not been observed in clinical practice.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied to intact skin and mucous membranes, it practically does not undergo systemic absorption.

Side effect

Local reactions: slight irritation, burning sensation are possible.

In the case of chronic or recurrent infection, topical treatment can be supplemented with systemic use. During menstruation, natamycin is not used intravaginally. With intravaginal use, there is no need to exclude sexual intercourse. However, it is recommended to conduct an examination of the sexual partners and, if a candidal lesion is detected, to conduct a course of treatment with natamycin. Also, during the period of treatment, barrier contraception should be used. Natamycin can be given to newborns.
