Pharmacological action
Antibacterial agent for topical use in ophthalmology, sulfanilamide derivative. It has a wide range of antimicrobial effects. It has a bacteriostatic effect. The mechanism of action is associated with competitive antagonism with PABA and competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, which leads to a violation of the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate acid, necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.
Sulfacetamide is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (including pathogenic cocci, Escherichia coli), Chlamydia spp., Actinomyces spp.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, it penetrates the tissues and fluids of the eye. It is absorbed into the systemic circulation through the inflamed conjunctiva.
Indications
Purulent corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, gonorrheal diseases of the eyes in newborns and adults, prevention of blennorrhea in newborns.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide and other sulfa drugs.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
There is no sufficient experience on the use of the drug during pregnancy, no breast-feeding. It is possible to use sulfacetamide for the treatment of pregnant and lactating mothers as prescribed by the attending physician, if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects.
Composition
1 ml contains:
Active ingredient sulfacetamide 200 mg.
Excipients: sodium thiosulfate hydrochloric acid solution 1 M water for injection.
Dosage and administration
Apply 2-3 drops in the lower conjunctival sac of each eye 5-6 times / day.
For the prevention of blennorrhea in newborns, 2 drops of the solution are instilled into the eyes immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.
Side effects
Local reactions: itching, redness, swelling.
Drug interaction
Sulphacetamide is topically incompatible with silver salts.
Overdose
Too often instillation of sodium sulfacil can sometimes lead to overdose, that manifests itself in the form of increased symptoms of eye irritation (pain and burning in the eye, foreign body sensation, itching, lacrimation). The occurrence of these symptoms should reduce the frequency of drops, using a solution of lower concentration.
Storage conditions
In the dark place at a temperature of no higher than 8-15 РC.
